Counseling

30 days should be considered a minimum (1). Some studies indicate that there is a direct correlation between a successful recovery and duration in an inpatient (and intensive outpatient) treatment center. Inpatient should always be followed with an intensive outpatient program.

Criteria for Choosing the Best Treatment Center

.

.

An integral part of the recovery MUST be to educate the support system (family/friends) as to the complexities of this addiction, recovery statistics with different treatments, relapse rates and how to handle relapses, pros and cons of different types of medication-based therapy as well as how to connect to, and stay supportive of, the person recovering from addiction. Please see all criteria (below) in the outpatient "multiple forms of support" section. The person in recovery for opioid/heroin addiction very likely WILL relapse. This is an ongoing process and the Treatment Facility you choose should be preparing you for the journey (not pretending they are the "end game").

THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT STEP YOU TAKE WILL BE CHOOSING THE TREATMENT CENTER

.

Program Duration

You cannot rely on the "diligence" of the Treatment Center to monitor that medication is administered to the intended patient, nor that outside "medication" is not brought in. The Centers know this and those that administer routine drug tests attempt to ensure that participants are following the program. Centers that only "randomly" drug test are cutting corners.

Every person suffering from addiction must have a specialized, individualized program that takes into consideration different addictions, different substances, differing commitment to recovery... (eg: a drug court patient may not have the same motivation to be in treatment as a person who is seeking treatment on his/her own). Treatment Centers that individualize each person's program is imperative so that the each individual's weaknesses are considered and each person's path to recovery is maximized and never compromised.

Drug Testing

Heroin is the only substance whose success of recovery DOUBLES for the affected individual if treatment medication is included in the recovery program (2). This should never be viewed as "substituting one drug for another." Recovery is about giving the person the best chance of staying ALIVE through the stages of recovery. Dead people cannot recover. Medication can be tapered after the someone's condition is stabilized. This is determined on an individual basis as all peoples' specific addictions are unique. The SAMSHA site allows you to look up Centers by zip code. >> more about MAT
